How has technology affected the way that you learn? include one specific example on how it has been a detriment or a boon to my learning.
As part of future school, there are many opened platforms which enable common spaces for educational absorb to take place, such as blogger, googledocs, wikispaces, facebook, tumblr, and much more! For me, I think that technology has been a boon to my learning, as it bears very favourable outcomes. Ultimately, technology has widened my scope of learning, increasingly opening up the various platforms to receive extra information.
Technology, plays a very heavy role in our learning. Not only can it be used as a communication, or entertainment platform, it can also be used as an educational platform, and adds a boost to our self-learning.
For example, my group and I had trouble meeting up to discuss many aspects of the book To Kill A Mockingbird, and time was running out. The assignment was due very soon but we all had insufficient time to finish it. But through googledocs, we all could access it through our own computers, at anywhere, anytime, hence the convenience.; it thus acted as a ever-present realm that was stable, controlled, and exquisite. In other words, we had to accomplish a task through online lesson, through brainstorming and discussion, and fortunately this googledocs platform allowed such communication to take place.
In all, technology does not only open up our learning to other disciplines, but also possess powers of communication, which saves time, and brings about convenience. This technology has brought about favourable outcomes, and interestingly helpful facets to solving our problem, and therefore is a remarkable boon.

Does caffeine have beneficial or harmful effects to the body? Elaborate.
An addiction, like any addiction acts as The Black Hole, where any fruitful attempts to escape the bondages on procrastination get sucked in, twirled, and remains there till light comes and pulls you out. Similarly, caffeine is very harmful to our body, but in this case, psychologically. Unfortunately, caffeine which we drink/consume is highly addictive, and is very difficult to break this addiction. Not only will it bring along health problems, the ever growing hunger for such caffeine would haunt and daunt you. When I was young, I loved Milo, but for me, Milo have several side effects; I started to feel dizzy. One sip of that heavenly Milo would shift me into another supernatural realm, in which I would be bereft of all consciousness, plunging into deep dull darkness. Therefore, in my family it was considered a sin if I were to even look at Milo. However, after the dull darkness I had awoken from,- after all the shaking and tugging of my concerned family members,- I would crave and yearn for the Milo again. This addiction is ecstatically uncontrollable. So the cycle would continue and continue where I would sneak out to grab Milo, and secretly sip it. A while later, knowingly, I would feel dizzy.
In the Milo, there was caffeine, and long after, I realized I was addicted to caffeine drinks, such as coffee. The caffeine had a real strong pull of addiction, which in my case, I failed to control. This addiction played a very heavy role, and is hence harmful psychologically. Caffeine is very harmful to one, as the addiction is comes with is unimaginable.
Therefore I take my stand, where caffeine definitely contains harmful effects to the body- psychologically. It is addictive to consume caffeine, and not only does it brings you health problems, it attracts you back for more. Well, I am not saying you cannot drink caffeine. You can have it once in a while, to satisfy the taste. But ultimately, do not let caffeine control you; but you control caffeine.

Online Lesson #7
War: A Personal Response
1. View the following slideshow at BBC News of war photos taken:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8492000/8492777.stm
2. Select one photo in the slideshow and write a descriptive piece of at least 300 words (min.); focus on mood, atmosphere, and emotions.
Since this is a piece of descriptive writing, you will not write a narrative. Focus specifically on description and sensory details.
3. Post the descriptive piece on your blog.
Descriptive piece :
There they stood, trudging unwillingly, reluctantly, yet helplessly through the crashed debris and rubble that remained; under the elephantine burden of the rusty, soggy, gear suits they wore, bearing under the oppressive heat, which seemed to be lighter than the yoke they entrapped inside; not to mention the suffocation, and the fog that cast a gloomy and glum atmospheric presence over the land. Every step they took, particles of dust strewed into mid-air, stubbornly but forcefully tickling their nostrils; crackles of the galvanized steel below them crunched, and the crisp of that sound seemed satisfying.
The humidity of the surroundings elevated, the perspiration on their foreheads accumulated dreadfully, their muscles ached and begged them to rest, and all of one's exasperation singularly accrued till almost unbearable.
The sourness and bitterness of the stuffed air seemed not only to provide oxygen, but choked the freshness of the air which once was abundant. They trudged through the broken pathway, wishing for it to end- not the tiresome journey they have endured since last week, not the cruelness of the burdened heat that never ceased, not the migraines and aches they suffered over days, but the war, and the inclination of deaths.
The gloom that persisted through the month began to loom and leer, encapsulating the nation into inevitable melancholy. It was not just an omniscient gloom, but a tangible one; one bringing out frustration, despair and helplessness, one that seemed to be the cause of everything. In their hearts, they just tried to shake off this gloom, and battled the urge to retreat.
Their endurance was put to the test. Their hearts were overtaken, their souls were overwhelmed by the ever growing suffering this war seemed to result. It was a war psychologically and physically. They heaved an air of confidence, shouted an outcry of bravery, and slowly, gradually, took their first step into the parched and crackled battlefield......

Do we need Heroes?
We have come so far down the trail of thinking that an individual would go to war to lead the battalion, as if the brutality of war was his sole meaning of life, that we scarcely understand the true definition on heroes nowadays. In contrast to this remarkable view, I think that heroes are ones who stand up for another, ones who support and encourage their counterparts , and ones who will persevere till the very end; and I think that in this competitive world, heroes are needed in our society.
Not that I disagree with the apparent image that heroes equals to war fighters. I think that, in addition, heroes in wars are very important, as they engage the soldiers in war actively, are more instructive, and are more responsible people. However all these personalities do not sufficiently accrue to the definition of a hero.
A hero, in modern day society, requires not only guts and bravery, but to have a persevering mind, and a persistent attitude. A hero may be brave, but if he gives up easily, what is the point? He has to be flourishingly persevering, that even the fiercest and most ferocious thunderstorms would fail in daunting him. When nothing or no one is able to abate the courage of this individual, will I call him a true hero. For example, when one is feeling down, stressed, and haplessly moody, a normal individual would either cower and try to sleep it off. A hero will, in such a time, persist through such a situation, and when he gets to the other side, look back stay satisfied with an accomplishment. Like anyone, he does has the urge to run away from the problem; but with his perseverance, he manages to brave through difficult situations- and similarly, in society, difficult situations may arise, and a hero would be the first to face up to the problem, and lead the way.
A hero, in modern day society, would be one who stands up for his friends, and truly cares about their well-being. With the courage to stand up for his acquaintances, people will look up to him as a good friend, one with a good soul and heart, one who deserves limitless respect. Rarely do we find one such person, as in modern society today, the competitiveness of the world completely demolishes the true facets of us humans. We are all too competitive to help each other, one refusing to teach another, and one rejecting another's plea for help. The world has gradually immersed itself in the competitiveness of the world, which unfortunately spoils the birth of heroes. For example, there are so many students out there, who only care about their studies, and care not about friends. They are individually faced, and selfish in a way. They rather stay at home and study , and care not about the feelings of their acquaintances they mix around in class so often. One might show his good outer self, but deep inside, only cares about himself, and only himself. As such, many people nowadays live like " a wolf in a sheep's skin", and only base their concerns on themselves. A true hero would be one who cares for his friends, and takes his friends' interests at heart, with a concern heart. This is what the world lacks.
Lastly, a hero supports his counterparts and encourages him in times of need. This is admittedly one almost utopian aspiration for a hero, as the current society have self-centred and self-enhanced individuals who care not for others, and only for themselves. There lies the failure for one to support a friend in need. Very often do we feel depressed, and helpless, and we all need some pillar of support during that point of time. And, this fast-paced competitive world brainwashes most people to strive for their own benefits and ignore the rest. Even families ignore one another- but in extreme cases. For example, someone feels very stressed as it is exam period, and he cannot absorb much from the teacher's lessons. Helplessly, he has no one to depend on, to rely, and give his all to. You could be his pillar of support, and try your best to tell him to snap out of this mood, encourage him to work harder on the different aspects of education, and gradually, make him feel much better. I think that the thing that this society lacks is such a person, who will really care for someone, and give his all to someone, or a friend. The world really lacks such a person.
In conclusion, it is a definite yes that we need heroes in this world. The declining number of heroes has a snowball effect, and will continuously drop. Therefore, an abrupt stop in the decline is required to at least pacify the competitive world. And how would this stop origin? From the birth of new heroes, will we be able to free the world from the bondages of competitiveness, and allow the true shells of love and kind and care of humans profusely expound towards the masses. Therefore, our world needs heroes, and not just heroes for war, but heroes in our society as well.

15 minute In Blog Writing #10
I have just read the manga Naruto, and it is published every Thursday. I look forward every Thursday to read the manga. Well, I like the way the writer plots the story line, and the different characters possessing different powers respectively. It is rather a ninja manga than anything else, and there are ranks of ninjas, trying to stop a war. ( the 4th ninja war). Although mangas are rather of comics, and pictures are more illustrated than words, I can infer from the pictorials on the story line, and each of the ninja's powers, from each of the villages they come from. So, I enjoy this manga as it is very interesting, and it is kind of addictive. It attracts the reader to come back and read the next chapter , as the writer stops the chapter at very exciting battles; and expects us to come back to read the next part of the battle. I think it is some kind of strategy to attract the readers to come back for more.
Honestly, I do not read the books due to the writing- basically because there is not much writing-, but read this manga as the ninjas have cool skills, and it is very entertaining to see them spar one on one with each other. At times, when one is in need, the village ninjas will back up, displaying a spectacular aura of teamwork, and I just love how they rescue each other. Between each ninja there are different sub-stories, trying to illustrate their deep character. Generally, I love this manga, Naruto and I am addicted to it !
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves magical, mythical characters, who use skills to fight one another. When you embark on this manga, you would definitely want to read it more, as the sub-stories are sometimes very profound and interesting.

Do we need heroes? ( paragraph more than 5 sentences)
Heroes can be expressed through many different forms, in our daily lives; and not just on the imaginative battlefield we vision. Definitely there are many facets to heroes we can explain , and a hero, in my opinion, does not need to fight on the battlefield, or military ground, but in fact, it is inexorable that one hero needs a heart- a heart for others.
Heroes can be the ones who light up or banausic, pedestrian lives. Heroes can be the ones who cheer you up. Heroes can be the ones who encourage us to greater heights. If it were not for heroes, how would life be? Therefore I feel that we do need heroes who have hearts of gold to serve the community and the nation willingly.

In Class Online Lesson 6
Letter of Encouragement and Empathy
You are all well aware of the disaster that struck Japan on 11 March 2011. Many news articles, news clips and accounts have been published in the newspapers, on the internet, and broadcast on television.
-Write a letter of encouragement to one of the survivors; you may also wish to write to any other survivor whom you read about in the news over the last several weeks. The letter should be minimum 250 words long, and you must follow the format of an informal letter. Post the letter on your LA blog.
Dear Uzumaki Naruto,
I am aware of the disaster which struck Japan on 11 March 2011. I would like to tell you first and foremost, this is not the end, and you can surely pick yourself up from this. Yes, this disaster shocked the world, and shocked you too, but if you do not start picking yourself up from this catastrophe, who will?
I have absolute faith in you, knowing the very personality you are, and trust that you will feel much better. You must be feeling devastated, with the loss of your house, your family, and even Momo, your lovely dog. But I would like you to know, that you still have me as a friend, and deep in my heart, I know that nothing can stop my dear friend from picking up. Although the starting might be
tough and hard to accept, life goes on.
As unbelievable as it seems, this disaster may be a blessing in disguise! Not only will you be more vigilant, and aware of your surroundings, you will also be able to point out those true friends, those friends who take care of you in such a crisis, friends who encourage you, support you all the way. Well, if you consider me as one, yes I am your good friend !
Naruto, please don't ever give up on hope. If there's a will, there's a way. Strengthen that soul within you ! It may take time, but you know, you always have me as your listening ear. Despite the fact that I am kilometres away from you, you can always turn to me for help. I will always be there, Naruto.
Lastly, please take good care of yourself, and keep me posted on the situation there!
Love,
Benedict

In Class 15 minute Blog Writing Prompt #9
Share an English-language fiction book that you've read recently. What did you enjoy about the book? What in the book challenged you? Who would you recommend the book to?
Locate the book on Goodreads.com and provide a link in your entry.
I recently read the book, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, and I think this books brings enjoyment, through the interest of the Russian Revolution in the past. The book symbolises many facets of the Russian Revolution, and I think that this book is worthy of being a classic. The Russian Revolution in this book is illustrated by the commandments, being flawed. I think I enjoyed a lot from reading the book, as it taught me more about the past, which I never known until I read the book. It enlightened me more on the Russian Revolution, and hints how the people feel at that time period.
This book is challenging to understand the true meaning, and the exact symbolism for each animal to a certain class creates more confusion. To comprehend the true meaning, without any help, would be almost impossible for me; I admire the writer's writing style. It is unique, and direct, pointing out certain facts bluntly, or subtly. I find the story worth reading twice, and I would love to learn more of the writer's writing style.
I would recommend this book to those literature lovers, and those who can understand the profound meaning behind the plain book/ title. I would encourage anyone who can " read between the lines", to start reading this book.

Projects Day Recount
Normally, the projects day in Hwa Chong Institution, is held annually, and pupils have to present their projects through different phases- prelims, finals, grand finals. The project choice is separated into different categories, and students can choose which category they would like to embark their project on. Projects day, is mandatory and carries a heavy weight in our IS component ( independent studies) .
Jia Sheng, Jin Xiang and I formed a group, and we brainstormed on the project, which we finally decided to be in category 4, ( resource development), entitled "Sports is for everyone". Basically, we are to set up a website, giving tips on how to start on sports ( especially those who are physically unfit and lazy), and how to minimise yourself from any injuries. On projects day itself, we were half done with the project only, and impromptu work was essential. We, as a group, illustrated magnificent teamwork to accomplish what would have took 3 hours in 1 hour. By then, we had even skipped or recess, and even rushed to the library to print our scripts. It was a stressful day that day.
On the presentation itself, we stood up, boldly, confidently, and presented our powerpoint in fluent and clear pronunciations, and stated the project's motive and methodology very clearly. On the microphone, I was bursting with confidence, and my other team members were readily answering any questions posed by the judges.
The presentation went relatively well, and the judges were pleased with our performance, on and off stage. I think I had gotten used to presenting on stages, but still fearful of those huge auditoriums with hundreds of eyes pruning me down. Essentially, this projects day is a success, albeit the impromptu work!
After one week , I checked the SMB and found out that our group had progressed to the next stage! Since the judges think our project is plausible and feasible, I will work hard and do my best to creating the website, and fulfilling the project's objectives.
All in all, this project so far has bonded me with my team members, through constant and relatively complicating brainstorming. I feel that friendship and bondings can be enhanced not only through entertainment, like games and camps, but also through intellectually educational events, which in this case, projects day- where the times I spent with my team mates were valuable and second to none. I will cherish the times ahead where we have to work as a team, and this project's day has been a moral boost in my studies thus far.

Reading and Reasoning
I will be talking about the few exercises I have accomplished about reading and reasoning.
Basically, we have to read a context from " To Kill A Mocking Bird", and answer very thought-provoking questions about them, and normally the questions would be very difficult to score well. Through this book, I have learnt to analyse and scrutinise the contextual information, and yet come up with answers to the questions the worksheet poses. Firstly, through these exercises, I have learnt to comprehend why the author writes certain sentence structures and phrases them subsequently, and yet convey a certain message/ fulfil a certain motive.
In my opinion this comprehension will not only benefit me, it would illustrate my love for literature, and is essential in the future. As such, slowly, gradually, my love for literature will increase, and influencing my future jobs. Yes, it may look exaggerating but everything starts from a scratch. Therefore, through small repetitive exercises, my love for literature can multiply and I might be able to realize the beauty of writing. Perhaps I am discussing too generally, hence I will scope down to written literature instead, whereby TKAM is thought.
Essentially, this comprehension can be put to thinking through the reading of the title of TKAM itself. When you once look upon the book, you would think it is some non-fiction book on mockingbirds- or maybe that was what I thought of before knowing it was a classic-, but instead of surface thinking, why not plunge into a realm of deep thinking?
Reading and reasoning thereby scopes in on written literature, and even narrower, on the story TKAM. I think the reason why the school is giving us such practices, is to inculcate the habit of reading in everyone. Through this worksheet, one might ponder more about the language used, or sentence structure of the author. I do not know about how others think, but this is my perception.
As such, I advocate the idea of reading and reasoning, and that it will benefit us not only now, but also in the long run. With the learned ability to 'read and reason', story books will turn from boredom to entertainment- and that is what the world is globally encouraging. I hope everyone might look upon my opinion and perspective as a valuable one.

Introduction on " racial slurs should be illegal" .
Since the last century, it is prominent that prejudice has been rampant, or at the very least, racial prejudice. Big differentiations between the whites and the blacks ; separating them forcefully, treating them differently, segregation relied on skin colour alone. It was very common in the past, but has been pacified over the turn of a new century. Nowadays, despite the constant efforts of changing into a multi-racial country, many citizens still shoot racial slurs at others. I think that racial slurs should be put to a very abrupt end immediately and laws should attain control and self-discipline in the citizens, by force or without.
Reflection :
Yes I have been a bystander of racial slurs during my primary school. Whereby a fight between the Malays and the Indians broke out. They were shouting out the opposition's skin colour; the Malays called the Indians black while the Indians called the Malays brown. It resulted in a fierce ferocious fight in the soccer field, and no one stepped in to mediate. My friends and I just stood by the side of the school soccer field and observed the fights in agony. I felt very uneasy due to the constant shouting of skin colour and shrill cries of pain resounded. It was a terrible fight. Although I did not know who spurred up this raging racial war, but I think it is essential for a multi-racial country. During the fight, I went back to the hall to report for prefect duty but the thoughts of a bloodshed fight haunted me. That was the first time I had heard racial slurs, and had a very bad experience of it.
